Why do we care?

The movement, treatment, and heating of water comprise 19% of California’s overall electricity use and 10% of the state’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. California has implemented statewide goals through legislation, such as Senate Bills 32 and 1425 (2016), to reduce and track the state’s overall greenhouse gas emissions. To help reduce and better understand the industry’s electricity usage and greenhouse gas emissions, Moulton Niguel Water District has partnered with the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management Master’s group project “Energy Savings from Moulton Niguel Water District Water Efficiency Programs”.

Energy Savings from Moulton Niguel Water District Water Efficiency Programs

What do we do?

We plan to accomplish the following objectives:

Primary Objective 1: Quantify the energy saved, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions mitigated, and energy costs avoided through water use reductions associated with Moulton Niguel Water District’s residential water efficiency rebate programs.

Primary Objective 2: Develop a repeatable framework that allows other municipal water districts and water utilities to estimate the energy saved, greenhouse gas emissions mitigated, and energy costs avoided with water use reductions associated with their own water efficiency rebate programs using the results and process of Primary Objective 1 as a reference point/“ground truth measurement.”

Secondary Objective: Develop a software tool to further streamline the implementation/use of the framework developed during the completion of Primary Objective 2.
